Privacy Policy for 9GAG Bot Zapper
Last Updated: May 27, 2025
This Privacy Policy describes how the "9GAG Bot Zapper" browser extension ("the Extension") handles information. The Extension is designed to enhance your 9GAG Browse experience by hiding content from a community-maintained blacklist of identified bot accounts.
- Information We Do Not Collect
The 9GAG Bot Zapper Extension is built with privacy in mind. We do not collect, transmit, store, or otherwise process any personal data from your Browse activity, your 9GAG account, or your device.
Specifically, the Extension does NOT:
Collect your IP address.
Collect your Browse history.
Collect your 9GAG username, password, or any account details.
Collect any data you enter on 9GAG or any other website.
Track your usage of the Extension.
Use analytics services.
Set any cookies on your behalf.
- Information the Extension Accesses and How It Is Used
The Extension operates by performing the following actions:
Accessing 9GAG Content: The Extension requires permission to read and modify content on https://9gag.com/* pages. This is necessary to identify and remove blacklisted posts directly from the webpage as you browse.
Fetching Public Blacklist Data: The Extension fetches a public JSON file containing a list of blacklisted 9GAG post IDs from a GitHub Gist (https://gist.githubusercontent.com/*). This file is an anonymous, community-maintained list of post IDs and does not contain any personal data. This data is used solely to identify and hide posts that match the blacklisted IDs.
Local Storage (Browser Storage API): The Extension temporarily stores the fetched blacklist data in your browser's local storage (chrome.storage.local for Chromium-based browsers, or equivalent for Firefox) to improve performance and reduce repeated network requests. This cached data is stored on your device only and is not accessible by us or third parties. It is periodically refreshed by fetching the latest blacklist from the remote URL.
Data Stored: Only the list of blacklisted post IDs and a timestamp of when it was last fetched.
Purpose: To quickly identify and hide blacklisted posts without needing to refetch the list from the internet on every page load or frequently.
Retention: This data is stored locally in your browser and automatically cleared or updated by the Extension after approximately one hour, or if the Extension is removed from your browser.
- Third-Party Services
The Extension relies on GitHub Gist (owned by GitHub, Inc.) to host the public blacklist data. When your browser fetches this data, it communicates directly with GitHub's servers. Please refer to GitHub's Privacy Policy for information on how they handle data related to requests made to their services. We have no control over, and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party websites or services.
- Data Security
Since the Extension does not collect or transmit any personal data, there is no personal data for us to secure. The blacklist data fetched and stored locally is public and non-personal.
- Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date at the top. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Your continued use of the Extension after any modifications indicates your acceptance of the updated terms.
