A theme with dark UI widgets (toolbars, icons, buttons, etc.), but content areas (text fields, etc.) that remain light for contrast and legibility. Hard-black backgrounds and hard-white labels/icons can also seem harsh, and arbitrary color highlights may not be to every user's taste, so this avoids any of that in favor of various shades of gray.
